Career for story-driven scenarios, Franchise for cross-platform animal trading, Sandbox for unlimited build experimentation. Start with Career to learn the new welfare system, switch into Franchise for trading, and Sandbox for creative builds.

Career mode in Planet Zoo 2

Career mode is the structured, scenario-driven path through FEN (Fauna and Ecosystems Network) missions. Players progress through guided scenarios that teach the welfare check, the new Aquarium and aviary workflows, the Wildlife Reserves, the Frontier Workshop uploads, and the conservation record. Career starts the player in a first-person visitor mode, then hands them a starting plot and walks them through the opening beats: shape and paint the land, carve a lake, lay paths from the entrance, drop a barrier loop, add food and water, release animals from the Animal Trading menu, then assign keepers from the Staff menu. Career unlocks the full launch roster of around 121 species as scenarios progress, and the 5-Star Zoo Reputation bar tracks Animal Husbandry, Sustainability, Guest Education, and Guest Experience inside each scenario.

Franchise mode in Planet Zoo 2

Franchise mode is the async animal marketplace running cross-platform. Players run a persistent zoo that other Franchise players can see, and they receive asynchronous animal offers that they can accept or reject. Franchise mode supports cross-platform play between PC (Steam and Epic), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The async animal marketplace is the only player-to-player contact inside Franchise, separate from the Frontier Workshop community content hub. Players use Franchise to grow their animal collection, trade offspring from breeding programmes, and work toward Conservation bonuses. Franchise Animal Storage has a finite cap, so players must plan their adoption, breeding, and trade cadence to keep space for incoming offers.

Sandbox mode in Planet Zoo 2

Sandbox mode unlocks the full launch roster of around 121 species and the new build tools (blueprints, piece-by-piece building, scaling, flexi-color, pathing, foliage and terrain brushes) without management restrictions. The 5-Star Zoo Reputation bar does not gate access to animals, and the player's budget is effectively uncapped. Sandbox is the cleanest mode for learning the build tools, the Frontier Workshop, and the Aquarium and aviary workflows without worrying about money, welfare, or staff. The unlimited budget and the unlocked roster are also the fastest way to iterate on scenery themes and biome-specific layouts.

Which Planet Zoo 2 game mode should I start with?

New player
Career mode teaches the welfare system through guided scenarios. Start with Career and progress until the first Wildlife Reserve mission unlocks.
Returning player
Career mode is the fastest way to lock in the new Aquarium, aviary, foliage brush, and terrain brush workflows. The scenarios cover all four habitat types by mid-game.
Creative builder
Sandbox mode unlocks the full launch roster and the new build tools without management. Iterate on blueprints, scenery themes, and biome-specific layouts.
Animal trader
Franchise mode is the async cross-platform animal marketplace. Use Franchise Animal Storage as the cap and accept offers that match the breeding plan.

How the Planet Zoo 2 game modes connect

The three Planet Zoo 2 game modes are independent but share the launch roster, the welfare check, and the build tools. Career unlocks species as scenarios progress, and the same species are then available in Franchise and Sandbox. Franchise Animal Storage carries over across Franchise saves and is separate from the in-zoo animal pens. Sandbox does not gate species by progress, so the launch roster is available from session one. The Frontier Workshop, the cross-platform content sharing system, sits across all three modes and is not tied to a specific save.
